Launceston is the second largest city in Tasmania after Hobart. Launceston is the ninth largest non-capital city in Australia. It is the only inland city in Tasmania. When founded in 1827, Burnie was named Emu Bay but it was renamed for William Burnie burns, a director of the Van Diemen's Land Company, in the early 1840s.
